Know Your Well: Why Registration Matters

Your water well helps tell the story of our groundwater resources. Every registered well provides valuable information that helps Lost Pines Groundwater Conservation District better understand the aquifers that supply water to Bastrop and Lee Counties. Information such as well location, depth, construction details, and aquifer data contributes to a more complete picture of groundwater conditions across the District. This information supports groundwater science, improves long-term planning efforts, and helps the District make informed management decisions based on local data.
Registering your well also provides important benefits for well owners. Registered wells may be eligible for the District's Well Watch Program, a free voluntary program that measures participating wells twice a year to help track groundwater levels over time. These measurements can provide valuable insight into changing groundwater conditions and help well owners better understand the health of their wells.
Registered wells may also be eligible for the District's Groundwater Mitigation Program. If a qualifying domestic or livestock well is impacted by permitted groundwater production, the program may provide assistance with measures such as lowering a pump or, in some cases, drilling a replacement well.
In addition, registering your well helps ensure that important information about your well is available when you need it. Whether you are researching your well's history, trying to determine which aquifer supplies your water, tracking water levels, selling your property, or participating in a District program, having your well on record can make finding information much easier.
Most importantly, well registration helps strengthen the groundwater data used to protect and manage the water resources that support our homes, farms, ranches, businesses, and communities. Each registered well contributes to a better understanding of local groundwater conditions and helps support responsible groundwater management for future generations.
Registration is free, simple, and benefits both well owners and the community. To learn more about well registration or to register your well, contact Lost Pines Groundwater Conservation District at (512) 360-5088.
