Lost Pines GCD Awarded $50,000 TWDB Research Grant

The Lost Pines Groundwater Conservation District (LPGCD) has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) to improve understanding of how groundwater and surface water interact between the Colorado River and the Colorado River alluvial.

The project will help LPGCD collect valuable scientific data about the relationship between the Colorado River and the Colorado River Alluvial. An alluvial is a type of aquifer that is often deposited by rivers over thousands of years. Because they are located next to rivers, sometimes water can move between the river and the alluvial aquifer. A better understanding of these groundwater-surface water interactions will support informed groundwater management, strengthen long-term water planning efforts, and provide additional information about one of the region's important water resources.

Groundwater and surface water are closely connected in many areas, but those connections can vary depending on local geology and hydrologic conditions. This grant will allow the District to gather scientific data that will improve our understanding of these interactions and help guide future groundwater management decisions. The study will focus on portions of the Colorado River where the Colorado River Alluvial is present. Information collected through the project will help identify how groundwater and river flows influence one another under different conditions.

Funding for the project is provided through the Texas Water Development Board, which supports groundwater science and water planning projects across Texas.
